Insane email situation (rant) 6 Months, 1 Week ago Karma: 10
For the past few months, I've been getting emails to an address I have that are not mine. In short, someone has a similar addy and is not very good about making sure their giving it out 'right'. Now I'm not talking about spam. I'm talking about a business bank account, itunes account, and a few others..

When I got the bank one, that scared me - At first, I thought it was spam. But it appeared 'clean', you know, nothing suspicious.. So I replied to it, and long story short received a cease and delete any previous emails from that bank as well as an appology letter. I can tell ya when the guys cars are due for service at the Ford dealer, and some parts he ordered for I think a GM G6. When this was happening a lot, I tried to send out a mass mail to any and every name similar to mine. But when iTunes and a couple purchase receipts came in the other night, I decided enough is enough. I contacted my ISP (cable co. named Cox, if you have them, seriously consider changing after you read this).

Cox will do nothing about it. They will not contact their customer. "It violates our privacy policy". After requesting a link to this policy, I replied (live text chat) with this snippet:

Code:

(3) respond to fraud, abuse or unauthorized reception;

I'm no fraud dude, nor an abuser, but UNAUTHORIZED RECEPTION??? Hello, would that not CLEARLY be exactly the situation? They say no. They will also not authorize me to contact him. (His name and address are disclosed in his iTunes account welcome letter, as well as on the invoices for purchases made, I think). I made it very clear if they cannot contact a customer OF THEIRS, HOW is it legal for ME to? After all, the email addy used may be mine, but the emails sure as crap are NOT me in any way. I am NOT the guy, that is not MY address..

I don't know what I more upset about. The fact they won't tell this guy he's using the wrong email address "because of a privacy policy", or the fact that it could be ME, or any one of us, and they will do absolutely nothing about it. I mean - Were I malicious I could request the password to the itunes account, buy everything, close the account, whatever I wanted.. I could have NOT notified the bank, and instead continued receiving statements, etc.. I mean.. There a TON of things I COULD be doing. And to be shut down by the ONLY people who should/could legally tell this guy, "um, sir, please check the email address you are using, you have made some errors and sensitive info is going where it is not intended" plain straight out refuse to anything about it. Unreal. Unacceptable. I have copied the transcript, and requested an official one from them, and I will not rest till something is done over this matter. This security matter left me awe-struck, and I wanted to let you know - If you use Cox.net, beware - Somehow, amazingly, their privacy policy prevents them from telling you, their customer that you may be releasing personal, sensitive information to someone else.

Wow. that sounds stupid. If I were you, i'd wait a few days and call 'em back...see if you can talk to someone else about it. Maybe the guy you were talking to didn't have a clue...
